Awareness Supporter
Awareness work in the context of Extinction Rebellion and other movements does not mean general awareness, but awareness of oppression, discrimination and repression. The aim of awareness work is to combat discrimination, oppression and repression. And not just during campaigns!
This includes, for example:
- Doing educational work to improve awareness of the various forms of oppression.
- Ensuring that no dominant or discriminatory behavior occurs during our meetings or events.
- Introduce methods in meetings and events that help us to prevent and address discriminatory behavior.
- When planning actions, consider how to protect people who are particularly at risk of police violence.
- To keep reminding the group and movement that awareness is everyone's responsibility.
What Awareness work isn’t:
General emotional support is not the primary task of the Awareness Team; this is the responsibility of others from the Action Care Team such as the Wellbeing Supporter.
Conflict resolution or the question of how to deal with people who repeatedly attract attention through discriminatory behavior or who are not prepared to deal with their behavior is also not the task of the Awareness Team. The awareness team is also not responsible for de-escalation. The focus of awareness work is on the victims, not the perpetrators.
The three principles of Awareness:
1. we believe you
2. we listen to you
3. we strive to support you
